Plate Five: Bushrangers Waiting for the Mails in New South Wales

Caption: Waiting for the Mail in England and Australia is accompanied sometimes by different meanings, especially in New South Wales. Her Majesty's mails have been waited for and on, with the most unremitting attention by sets of treeborders, or Bushrangers, who for years past have been regularly robbing both passengers and letters which timeless pursuit they continue to carry on with perfect impunity, the police being totally unable to arrest, or even prevent them practising their depredations.

Artist: Loosely based on drawings by S.T. Gill, including some plates from The Australian sketchbook.
