Plate Two: The Lost Bushman or the Unfortunate Digger that Never Returned

Caption: No pen is capable of adequately conveying to one's mind the terror, wild excitement, ending in the utter despondency, and depression of one who turns to himself, after vainly endeavouring to retrace his steps, and feels, "I am lost in the Bush."  How many of those whose name appears in the "Melbourne Argus" daily, nay monthly, under the head of "Missing Friends," lie bleaching in the sun, within that solitary and in many instances untrodden Wilderness known as the "Australian Bush."

The burning sun poured on his weakened frame,
No kindly spirit standing at his side,
Without a slab to mark his name,
The famished lost one in the Prarie died.

Artist: Loosely based on drawings by S.T. Gill, including some plates from The Australian sketchbook.
