This Day in Australian History - 4th November

1816 - Hanged in Sydney, Colin Hunter, for the murder at Canterbury of John Miller who was shot during a burglary of his home. Thomas Dooley and Michael Ryan were also hanged for aiding and abetting the murder of John Miller. After execution their bodies were handed over for dissection and anatomisation.

1825 - Dr. Laurence Hynes Halloran wass appointed first headmaster of Sydney Free Grammar School.

1825 - The penal settlement at Redcliffe was removed to Brisbane.

1829 - Roger Therry, barrister, arrived in Sydney. He was appointed Commissioner of Requests in New South Wales and in 1845 was sent to Port Phillip as a Judge. In the following year he became a Puisne Judge of New South Wales and returned to Ireland in 1850. He was the author of "'Thirty Years' Residence in New South Wales."

1836 - Sir Julian E. Salomons, New South Wales judge and politician, was born.

1840 - William R. Giblin, judge, politician, and Tasmanian premier, was born.

1847 - Hanged at Newcastle, Peter Pigeon, for the murder of William "Coachey" Taylor at Morpeth.

1857 - Hanged at Goulburn, Patrick Walsh, for the murder of William Graham at Balranald.

1859 - J. McDouall Stuart's expedition left Chambers' Creek on this day, and traversed the country in the vicinity of Lake Torrens, returning on January 21, 1800.

1878 - Police patrols were increased along the Murray River as the manhunt for the Kelly gang intensifies, following the murder of three policemen at Stringybark Creek.

1886 - Sir James Martin, Chief Justice of New South Wales, died aged 66. He was Premier of New South Wales three times before he accepted office as Chief Justice.

1890 - Central Queensland's petition for separation was sent to Brisbane.

1890 - Australian ballot system was introduced in the United States.

1895 - Hanged at Boggo Road Gaol, Jackey (Indigenous), for the murder of Jacky Williams near Mount Morgan; and, Frank Tinyana, for the attempted murder of his wife Amelia and the murder of Constable William Conroy on Thursday Island.

1895 - Hanged at Melbourne Gaol, Emma Williams, for the murder of her two-year-old son John at Port Melbourne.

1896 - Queensland rejected the Federal Enabling Act.

1898 - Five men were killed and five injured by a fall of ore at Mount Morgan, Queensland.

1906 - Five men were killed in the Mount Morgan mine, Queensland.

1819 - Queensland Government commandeered all meat supplies in Queensland.

1819 - Popular Initiative and Referendum Bill passed its final stage in Queensland Legislative Council.

1921 - The storm-warning and wireless station on Willis Island, off North Queensland's coast, was completed.

1930 - Phar Lap wins the Melbourne Cup for the first time.

1932 - Australia's first Milk Bar was opened. 

1944 - The troops of the 6th Brigade landed at Jacquinot Bay, New Britain. Jacquinot Bay became an important base for Australian operations against the Japanese on New Britain.

1994 - Sydney airport's third runway opened.
