This Day in Australian History - 31st October

1793 - James Dunlop, one of Governor Brisbane's assistants in his Australian observatory, is born.

1818 - John Oxley's expedition party is attacked by Aborigines as they camp near Port Stephens.

1823 - Oxley explores the Tweed River.

1835 - The first publican's license in Melbourne is issued.

1839 - Military juries cease to operate in the New South Wales Supreme Court and Courts of Quarter Sessions.

1840 - The first municipal election held in Australia takes place at Adelaide. James Hurtle Fisher was elected first Mayor of Adelaide.

1844 - Hanged at Bathurst, Frederick (or Abraham) Gasten (or Gaston), for the murder of Elizabeth Price near Kanimbla.

1845 - Six MLC's protesting the cost of transportation "Patriotic Six" depart Legislative Council, leaving it without a quorum.

1847 - All Saints' Church, Parramatta, is opened for service by Rev. James Walker, M.A. He received his appointment as incumbent of the parish on 21 April, 1843, and held services in a schoolroom in Pennant-street until his church was erected.

1851 - The New South Wales Legislative Council votes unanimously against transportation "in any form whatsoever, to any part of Her Majesty's Australian possessions".

1851 - Hanged at Launceston, Francis Duke, for the murder of William Smith at Fern Tree Hill, near Deloraine; and, James Yardley for attempted murder of Robert Hudson at Deloraine.

1853 - The barque "Countess of Derby" is wrecked at South Passage in Moreton Bay. The wreck was sold a few days later for £29, but the boats and some of the cargo was brought in £140.

1854 - New Constitution passed by the Tasmanian Legislative Council.

1858 - The first official telegram between Melbourne and Sydney is sent. The line had been completed two days previously.

1861 - Hanged at Melbourne Gaol, Thomas Sanders, for the violation of Mary Egan at Keilor.

1867 - An official reception is given at Adelaide Town Hall to Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, in Australia's first royal visit to South Australia.

1878 - Brigadier-General H. N. MacLaurin, who was killed on Gallipoli, is born.

1888 - Sir Hubert Wilkins, the famous explorer and war photographer, is born.

1893 - Two passenger trains met on the same line in broad daylight at Redfern station. The liberated steam from the damaged locomotives played on the helpless victims of the collision, and 13 were killed and 25 injured. 

1895 - Middleweight boxer Les Darcy is born.

1900 - The Lady Lamington Hospital in Brisbane is opened.

1917 - At Beersheba the 4th Light Horse Brigade's bold charge against Turkish positions at Beersheba, seized a critical wells that enabled British empire forces to break the Ottoman line near Gaza and advance into Palestine.

1923 - The start of 160 consecutive days of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit at Marble Bar, Western Australia.

1923 - The Victorian Police strike commenced; half the police force in Melbourne went on strike and rioting and looting ensued.

1924 - The last span of the railway bridge over Johnstone River, North Queensland, placed in position, thus giving railway communication from Cloncurry to Perth, in Western Australia, 4,800 miles.

1929 - Eddie Charlton, top-class snooker and billiards player, is born in Merewether, New South Wales.

1929 - Labor Prime Minister of Australia announces that the Government would suspend compulsory military training.

1961 - Parkes radiotelescope officially opened by the Governor General.
