1728 - James Cook, explorer, navigator, and cartographer who charted the east coast of Australia, is born at Marton, Yorkshire.
1800 - Governor King issues an order that licences to sell liquor would be granted to persons recommended by the magistrates of New South Wales.
1838 - On 26 October, Captain Gordon Bremer in charge of an expedition to take formal possession of the territory about Port Essington arrives in that port in charge of H.M.S. Alligator (Captain J. McArthur), H.M. brig Britomart (Lieutenant O. Stanley), and the transport Orontes, with troops and convicts. He re-annexed the territory in the name of King George IV. On the following day, 27 October, he entered on the work of constructing barracks, fortifications, and stores. The settlement was effected on the site of the present town of Victoria. Bremer had previously taken possession at Port Essington on 24 September, 1824.
1838 - The first issue of the Port Phillip "Gazette", is published by Messrs. Arden and Strode in Melbourne. It was published twice a week. It was eventually merged in another Melbourne paper, the "Argus".
1841 - One of the last ships with religious refugees from Germany arrives in South Australia.
1851 - Hanged at Oatlands, John Crisp, for Wounding with Intent Constable William Donohoo at Swansea.
1856 - The South Australian Constitution, is proclaimed and Boyle Finniss formed the first Ministry.
1857 - Hanged at Oatlands, Abraham Munday, for attempted murder by poison of George White at Courland Bay; and Richard "Long Mick" Ennis, for the murder of George Sturgeon at Kitty's Corner, near Antill Ponds.
1857 - The Hornet Bank massacre occurs. Fraser was managing the station, then known as Goongarry, for Andrew Scott. Early in the morning the Aboriginals killed Fraser, his wife, six children, and three station hands. The name of the station was changed later to Hornet Bank.
1858 - Sir Neil E. Lewis, Premier of Tasmania and held office in the first Federal Ministry, is born in Hobart. He had taken a very keen interest in the development of his native country.
1869 - Payment of members is passed by the Victorian Parliament.
1875 - Hanged at Mount Gambier, William Page, for the murder of Mary Julia Buchan.
1885 - Hanged at Perth Goal, Henry Sherry, for the murder of Catherine Waldock at Quinderring, Williams on 16 September 1885.
1891 - The first wool sales in Brisbane are held.
1893 - Sir Hugh Nelson becomes Premier of Queensland.
1897 – St Patrick's Cathedral, Melbourne is consecrated.
1900 – Notorious murderer Jimmy Governor is apprehended near Wingham, New South Wales.
1900 - Queensland Institute of Engineers inaugurated in Brisbane.
1906 - The sale takes place at Cessnock of Sheddon's township allotments, near Aberdare Extended Colliery, Cessnock.
1915 – William Morris "Billy" Hughes becomes the seventh Prime Minister of Australia and the first to serve consecutive terms in office.
1921 - An Act to abolish the Legislative Council (Upper House) in Queensland is passed. The council had been swamped to carry the Bill.
1927 – Melbourne gangster Squizzy Taylor is killed in a shootout.
1928 - Opening of the new railway workshops at Willowburn, Toowoomba. They had been under construction for nine years.
1953 – British nuclear test, Totem 2, is detonated at Emu Field, South Australia.
1980 – The Great Barrier Reef is listed as a World Heritage Site.
