1616 - Dutch sea-captain Dirk Hartog, in command of the Emdraght, becomes the first European to set foot on Australia's western coast, landing at the island now known as Dirk Hartog's Island. He sailed away three days later, but left a plate bearing an inscription in reference to his visit. On 3 February 1697, the plate was found by the Dutch navigator, Willem de Vlamingh, of the ship Geelvinck.
1791 - First whaling vessel leaves Sydney on a search for whales.
1794 - The Scotch martyrs, Thomas Muir, Thomas Fysshe Palmer, Maurice Margarot, and William Skirving, transported from Edinburgh as political prisoners, arrive in Sydney. A fifth prisoner, Joseph Gerald, arrived on 5 November of the same year. They were educated men, who had paid the penalty of agitating for reforms.
1806 - William Timothy Cape, one of Australia's pioneer teachers, is born in England. He was the first Headmaster of old Sydney College.
1818 - John Oxley, and his party, make a camp at the foot of Rectory Hill, Goulburn site, near the junction of the Mulwarrie and Wollondilly Rivers.

1841 - Hanged at Launceston, James Broomfield, bushranger, for armed robbery at Tarleton.
1853 - Hanged at Launceston, William Brown, for stabbing with intent to murder James Stephens.
1853 - Hanged at Melbourne Gaol, Michael Fennessy, for murder of his wife Eliza Fennessy off Little Bourke Street; and Alexander Ram, for the murder of Kitty Finessy at Prahran.
1883 - Hanged at Perth Gaol, John Maroney and William Watkins, for the murder of James Watson at Yellenup, Kojonup on 1 May 1883.
1885 - Hanged at Boggo Road Gaol, Walter Edward Gordon, for the murder of Walter Bunning near Rockhampton.
1888 - The mutiny of the Navy ship “The Gayundah” takes place on the Brisbane River, Queensland.
1892 - Chief Justice Lilley resigns his position.
1903 - The first Mass at Kurri Kurri is celebrated during a mission held in a tent on property at the corner of Victoria and Barton Streets. The mission was conducted by a Redemptorist Father.
1906 - The Local Government Extension Bill passes the New South Wales Legislative Assembly.
1911 - H.M.A.S. Australia, the flagship of the first Australian Navy, is launched at Clydebank, Glasgow, by Lady Reid, wife of Sir George Reid. It was sunk on 12 April 1924 in accordance with Disarmament Agreement.
1919 - Dr. Willim Kidston, Queensland Premier, and Member of Land Court, dies.
1921 - In the Queensland Legislative Assembly the Legislative Council Abolition Bill is passed.
1926 - Hanged at Fremantle Prison, William Coulter and Phillip J. Trefene, for the murders of Inspector John Walsh and Sergeant Alexander Pitman near Boulder on 28 April 1926.
1926 - Sir Matthew Nathan, who had been Governor of Queensland, leaves Thursday Island on his return to England.
1938 - A major blow to the wine industry in South Australia occurred when three of the leading vignerons were killed in a plane crash in Victoria. It was the worst aviation disaster in Australia to that time with eighteen dead. The three winemakers were: Hugo Gramp, Managing Director of Gramps’ Orlando Wines, Sidney Hill Smith, Managing Director of Yalumba and Thomas Hardy, Managing Director of Thomas Hardy & Sons.
1942 - In action on 25th and 26th, Private P.E. Gratwick, 2/48th Battalion, originally from Katanning, Western Australia, wins the Victoria Cross at El Alamein, Egypt.
1990 - Nelson Mandela visits the Parliament of Victoria, eight-and-a-half months after his release from prison in South Africa.
