This Day in Australian History - 23rd September

1818 - European discovery, by John Oxley and George William Evans, of Mount Seaview for its panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean near that locality.

1831 - Hanged at Sydney: John Leadbeater (alias Onions), for the murder of John Maxwell at Patterson's Plains; and, Thomas Lucas, for the murder of Constable Robert "Long Bob" Watersworth in the West Pennant Hills area.

1834 - Hanged at Norfolk Island for mutiny: Robert Douglas, Henry Drummond, James Bell, Joseph Butler, Robert Glennie, Walter Burke, Joseph Snell, William McCulloch, Michael Andrews, William Groves, Thomas Freshwater, Henry Knowles, and Robert Ryan.

1845 - Hanged at Hobart: Thomas Gomm, William Taylor, and Isaac Lockwood, for the murder of Jane Saunders at New Norfolk.

1846 - European discovery, by (Sir) Thomas Mitchell, of the Alice River in Queensland.

1849 - A Select Committee of the Legislative Council, reported in favour of the founding of a University in Sydney.

1856 - Perth, Western Australia, is proclaimed a city.

1856 - Foundation stone of St. Paul's Church, West Maitland, is laid by the Bishop of Newcastle (Right Rev. Dr. W. Tyrrell), assisted by Rev. J. R. Thackeray.

1860 - The "Register", South Australia, pointed out the absurdity of dressing the South Australian Volunteer Forces in uniforms which included "black stocks, gold lace, and feather plumes" when much of their work was carried out in hot weather.

1860 -The South Australian Government proposes to give each retiring civil servant a bonus of one month's pay for every year of his service.

1865 - Cleveland, Queensland, made a port of entry.

1876 - General Sir Cyril Brudenell Bingham White, is born. More commonly known as Sir Brudenell White or C. B. B. White, was a senior officer in the Australian Army during WWI served on the staff of General Bridges and General Birdwood, and later as Chief of the General Staff from 1920 to 1923 and again from March to August 1940, when he was killed in the Canberra air disaster.

1902 - First Budget speech in Commonwealth Parliament delivered by Sir George Turner, Treasurer.

1903 - Sir Samuel Griffith appointed Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia; Sir Edmund Barton and R. E. O'Connor to be Puisne Judges.

1910 - Artesian water flow of 3,250,000 gallons daily at Tinderry bore, Thargomindah; depth 2,450 feet.

1919 - Seamen's strike in Australia is settled.

1965 - Lawyer and judge Roma Mitchell becomes the first female judge in Australia.
