Calendar Prisoners for Trial - NSW Supreme Court - 13th January 1825


PRISONERS FOR TRIAL.

The trial of prisoners commenced yesterday in the Supreme Court; there are at present 98 down for trial. The following is a list of the prisoners, together with their offences:—

Thomas Murray charged, on oath of Clements Doughty, with breaking open his master's stores, and stealing a quantity of salt, &c. the property of Mr. McKenzie

Thomas Carter charged, by William Pluson, constable, on suspicion of robbing the house of James Dickett, of Evan. 

William Mealy charged, on oath, with pig-stealing. 

Thomas Slater charged, on oath, with stealing a silver watch, and a gold key, the property of Hugh Murray. 

J. Hancock charged, on oath, with forging and uttering an order, in writing, purporting to be the order of Mr. R. Cooper on Mr. Brown, to deliver two baskets of tobacco, and knowing the same to be forged. 

William Shea committed in consequence of the verdict of a Coroner's Jury. 

Thomas Westgarth charged, on oath, with stealing from the dwelling-house of Maria Mitchell, a shirt, silk frock, and silk handkerchief, her property. 

J. Maloney charged, on oath, with stealing from the person of W. Bigges an order for £2 2s. 6d. and sundry monies, his property. 

George Browne charged, on oath, with stealing from the dwelling-house of Mr. J. Stewart, on the Paramatta road, four shirts, two pair of trowsers, &c. his property. 

J. Murphy charged, on oath, with stealing from the dwelling-house of Dr. R. Wardell one double cased gold watch, several articles of wearing apparel, one note of 50 dollars of the Bank of New South Wales, and several Spanish dollars, his property. 

J. Smith charged, on oath with privately stealing certain pieces and remnants of cloth from the premises of Mr. R. Cooper, his property. 

O. McNally charged, on oath, with stealing certain monies, and silver coin, from the house of Hugh Murray, his property. 

J. Rowe charged, on oath of Francis Collins, with suspicion of felony. 

J. McGrath, J. Maunder, and J. Adams charged, on oath, with strong suspicion of entering the store-house of Captain W. Campbell, on the night of the 2d of September last, and stealing two mats of sugar, one cask of pork, and a small quantity of tobacco. 

W. Rossett, Michael Oghan, W. Walsh, C. Cryer, and J. Norris charged with illegally destroying wild cattle. 

T. Wood, James Blain, and George Watkin charged with a highway robbery. 

W. Wells and J. Robinson charged, on oath, with stealing from the premises of A. Frazier, of Sydney, thirty-eight and one half bushels of wheat, his property. 

J. Hennessy charged, upon the oath of Mary McAdams and John Brennan, with an attempt to commit a rape on the body of Ann McAdams, aged six years, on the 10th of November last. 

E. Bates committed by the Coroner for the wilful murder of Julia Bates, his wife. 

Thomas Sawyer, charged, on oath, with stealing £16 10s. in silver monies, the property of William Williams. 

Mary Ann Furnace charged, on oath, with stealing a silver watch, from the person of R. Sherrett, his property.

P. Harding stands committed for various felonies. 

J. Bennett charged on the suspicion of the murder of Mary Bryant, who cohabited with him. 

R. Ivory, J. Buckley, T. Madden, and J. Neal charged, on oath, with a burglary in the house of J. Greenwood, at Canterbury. 

Matthew Dyer, Patrick Kenna, T. Madden, and. R. Bluet charged, on oath, with the wilful murder of Mr. Cheshire, on the night, of the 25th January.

Matthew Tomkin accessary before the fact in the robbery of the house of J. Greenwood, at Canterbury. 

Martin Benson, J. Cogan, J. Wright, A. Rodney, J. Spaule, N. Kayne, and Eliza Campbell charged with wilfully and ferociously murdering their master, Mr. J. Brackfield

T. Chittendin, Eliza Chittendin, and Stephen Jones accessories after the fact of the murder of Mr. J. Brackfield, in receiving the property of the deceased, knowing it to have been stolen. 

T. Baxter and T. Dickens charged, on oath, with stealing from a cart, on the Liverpool road, one counterpane pillow, and other articles, the property of F. E. Forbes, of Sydney. 

T. Baxter is further charged, on oath, with a street robbery, and forcibly taking from the person of Samuel Johnson, a soldier, a knife, his property.

John Wilson and George Chapman charged, on oath, with violently assaulting two officers of the Minerva, in the execution of their duty. 

John Wood charged, on oath, with stealing from the premises of Sarah Roberts, two shirts her property. 

J. Schofield charged, on oath, with conniving at the escape of five convicts from the Prisoners' Barracks, while on duty there as a watchman. 

Thomas Gorden charged, on oath, with maiming a mare, the property of J. T. Campbell, Esq.

S. Smith charged, on oath, with an attempt to murder J. Harris, Esq. J.P. 

W. Salmon charged on suspicion of stopping J. Tenton on the highway the 22d of October, and stealing from a waggon under his charge one and a half side of leather, the property of R. Ridge

S. Towlen charged with committing a highway robbery on the 14th of October last. 

W. Dowling and J. Hanshaw charged, on oath, with burglariously breaking into the stores of Mr. Robert Cooper, and stealing thereout a quantity of sugar, in bags, his property. 

E. Watson and J. Matthews charged with stopping a cart on the road between Windsor and Parramatta, on the 29th October last, and taking six penny-pieces; and further charged with stopping Richard Potter, of Windsor, the same night, and taking from his person a dump, a clasp knife, jacket, and shirt. 

T. Willwrighty, alias Johnson charged, on oath, with felony. 

J. Liberbera charged, on the oath of Mary Joy, and Mary Delahunt, with stabbing John Stewart, with intent to murder, and also with stabbing at the said Mary Joy and Mary Delahunt

T. Chamberlain and M. Burke charged, on oath of William Penny, with maliciously killing a number of black natives, names unknown. 

J. Spencer, and Thomas Hawke charged, on oath, with stealing a quantity of rope from the ship Ardent, now in this port. 

O.Tonney charged, on oath, with pig-stealing.

J. Leon ditto. 

T. Madden charged, on oath, with stealing a steel mill from the premises of Mr. R. Dunn, his property. 

C. Cant charged, on oath, with stealing two working bullocks, the property of government.

J. Cue charged, on the oath of T. Brown, with maliciously maiming a gelding, the property of J. Oxley, Esq. 

Mary Anne Wise charged, on oath, with privately stealing from the apartments of Capt. Bishop, of H. M. 40th regt. a bag, containing 1000 dollars, his property. 

W. Spencer and G. Mitchell charged, on the oath of W. Griffin and P. Sullivan, with killing a calf, the property of the executors of Col. Molie.

J. Farrell charged, on oath, with stealing from the dwelling-house and shop of Mr. R. Cooper certain goods and monies, his property. 

J. Weavers, Wm. Moore, and Terence Henly charged, on oath, with highway robbery, &c. &c. 

A. Herne charged, on a Coroner's Inquest, held at Cobberty, with manslaughter. 

J. Booth charged, on oath, with assaulting, on the King's highway, and forcibly taking from the person of C. Spain, a silver watch, his property. 

E. Simpson charged with burglary in the dwelling-house of J. Richardson, and stealing therefrom an old black coat, and one pair of grey cloth trowsers, his property. 

J. Fox, J. Keskin, or Harvey, W. Lain, W. Knight, J. Eldridge, J. Farrow, W. Davis, W. Thompson, and W. Brown charged, on oath, with mutiny and conspiracy on board the ship Marianna, when in the Pacific Ocean, on the 27th November last. 

T. George charged, on oath, with having stolen from the shop, stores, or dwelling-house of Mr. R. Cooper, certain goods, wares, and merchandizes, his property.
