George O'Brien was born at Dromoland Castle County Clare, Ireland, in 1821, the fifth son of Admiral Robert O'Brien. His parents died when he was young and by 1839 he was living in Melbourne, Australia.  Leaving soon after, George returned to Melbourne in 1850 and worked as a draughtsman in the surveyor's office.  In 1853 he married Jane Mashford at St. James' Church in Melbourne.  George O'Brien was active in the Victorian Fine Arts Society, exhibiting paintings in 1856 and 1858, and by 1854 was advertising his services as an architect and surveyor. George and his family left Australia in 1863, moving to Dunedin in New Zealand.  George would remain in New Zealand for the rest of his life, dying on 30th August 1888 in Dunedin.
