Augustus Baker Pierce, was born in the United States of America in 1840. He spent 30 years travelling around Australia, later writing about this time in his autobiography "Knocking About: being some adventures of Augustus Baker Peirce in Australia". While in Australia he worked as a commercial photographer, artist, scene painter and riverboat captain. He often signed his work with different spellings of his surname, either Pierce or Peirce. Augustus Pierce / Peirce died in 1919 in the United States.
