Children and Fruit (1932)

Care is necessary with regard to young children and fruit, also milk and cream. The safest fruit of all for quite young children is the orange. Grapes are also most suitable for children, especially if they are peeled and stoned. With any acid fruit mothers should remember that milk should not be given with it, but drunk — and slowly sipped — at the end of the meal. The same thing applies to cream, which in itself is a splendid food for children, but if served with acid fruit, such as rhubarb, it is not easily digested. Give a child a few spoonfuls of pure cream a day, or let it be served with either baked or stewed apples, mashed ripe bananas, or stewed prunes or figs.
