This Day in Australian History - 5th September

1699 - Sea explorer William Dampier departs 'New Holland' after sailing along the western coastline for five days.

1797 - Several convicts boarded a Government vessel, the Cumberland, in Broken Bay, and, accompanied by some of the crew, sailed away. Two parties were sent in pursuit by Governor Hunter in rowing boats, one to the north and the other to the south. The northern party was under Lieutenant John Shortland, and on the return voyage to Sydney Shortland was attracted by the island now known as Nobbys, at Newcastle, and, investigating, discovered Port Hunter and the estuary of the Hunter River on September 9.

1827 - Clarence River discovered.

1829 - After a rapid survey of the area chosen for the site of Perth, Western Australia, the first land sales took place. On this day a few allotments were offered for sale. During the time of the survey the officials and settlers were accommodated on Garden Island. By the end of the year the city had become a struggling village with a population of about three hundred.

1831 - John Roberts hanged at Sydney for the murder of James McIlroy (James Michael Roy) at Patterson's Plains. Roberts was Welsh and spoke little English. His corpse was sent for dissection but the remains were crudely discarded and were found scattered in the Domain

1837 - James Ruse, who was given the first grant of land in Australia, dies. The land granted to Ruse lies within the present town of Parramatta, New South Wales.

1837 - Hanged at Sydney, Philip Hennessy and Dennis Broslughan (sometimes Brossley), for highway robbery of Alexander Hamilton in the Hunter Valley.

1839 - Port Darwin was discovered by Captain Lort Stokes.

1842 - Alkepurata ("Roger"), from Port Fairy, was hanged at Melbourne for murder of Patrick Codd at Mount Rouse, Hamilton.

1850 - Hanged outside Adelaide Gaol, James Yates, for the murder of a shepherd named Jack Mansforth at Skillagolee Creek.

1858 - Victor Daly, Australian poet, was born on this day at Navan, near Armagh, Ireland.

1859 - Brisbane Municipality incorporated.

1860 - The construction of a railway from Port Augusta northwards was discussed in the House of Assembly. Its object was to develop the northern country.

1860 - In compliance with a memorial adopted at an unemployed meeting in the parklands, the Mayor of Adelaide decided to call a public meeting to discuss unemployment relief.

1866 - Henry Parkes introduced his Education Bill in the New South Wales Parliament. It was passed on December 21, 1866.

1877 - First female clerk in the public service, appointed by Adelaide Council of Education.

1880 - The first Salvation Army meeting in Australia is held in Adelaide.

1885 - Railway extension to Logan Village, Queensland, opened.

1891 - The Australian Auxiliary Squadron arrived in Sydney.

1892 - Cunnamulla, Queensland, damaged by a tornado.

1893 - Sir Harry Norman (then Governor of Queensland) was offered the Viceroyship of India. He refused to accept it.

1903 - The town allotments on the east side of Vincent-street, Cessnock, Bridge's subdivision were sold by auction.

1905 - Fifty prominent men meet in Sydney's Australia Hotel to found the National Defense League fueled by fear of Japan after its victory over Russia.

1908 - Mining disaster at Mount Morgan, Queensland, seven men killed.

1909 - Archie Jackson, New South Wales cricketer, was born on this day.

1912 - Thomas Joseph Ryan is elected as leader of the Labor Party in Queensland, in succession to David Bowman, who resigned because of illness.

1919 - Two bulk stores containing wool, at Surry Hills, Sydney, burnt; damage estimated at over £1,000,000.

1925 - Railway strike in Queensland declared off.

1926 - Referendum in Australia resulted in majority against proposed measures for regulating industry.

1928 - Eucharistic Congress in Sydney opened.
