Official 'assisted passage' passenger lists 1847 - 1855

These official passenger lists record emigrants selected by the Colonization Commissioners, London, whose passages were paid for out of the Emigration Fund.

The lists typically give passengers' names, and most give ages, occupation and marital status, while some give county of origin. Not all lists have survived.

The lists are grouped into years and then arranged numerically within each year.


Note: An alphabetical name index for lists dating between 1845 - 1886 is available.

Passenger lists 1888 - 1931

These records are the official passenger lists arriving in Port Adelaide from overseas. The lists include ship's name, master's name, tonnage, where bound, ports of embarkation and disembarkation, names of passengers, age (adult or child), occupation, nationality and number of passengers.  Lists may contain names of passengers disembarking at Australian ports other than Adelaide.  Not all lists have survived. 

The lists are grouped into years and then arranged numerically within each year.

Official lists of passengers arriving in South Australia from overseas 1888 -1924

This series contains official passenger lists of ships arriving in Port Adelaide from overseas, from 1888-1940. The Customs Department required masters of incoming ships to prepare and forward passenger lists to the Department.

Information recorded on passenger lists varies but generally include ship's name, master's name, tonnage, where bound, ports of embarkation and disembarkation, names of passengers, age (adult or child), occupation, nationality and number of passengers. Lists may contain names of passengers disembarking at Australian ports other than Adelaide. Not all lists have survived.

The Special Lists for this series cover the years 1888 to 1924 (with gaps for 1893 and 1895) and are arranged alphabetically by the surname of the passenger.


Horner Index to overseas departures by passenger ship from South Australia 1836-1887

Horner index was compiled by Sally Horner from the Register newspaper and is an alphabetical list by passenger of departures from South Australia directly for overseas between 1836-1887. It does not list interstate or intrastate departures.)

The index is divided into two sequences 1836-1875 and 1876-1887.


19th century Shipping & Migration to South Australia Databases

South Australian family historian, Graham Jaunay, has compiled three online databases which can be used for accessing details on emigrants.  The first database records the 11,518 labourers and their families who applied for free passage 1836-1840.  A second database records the 2,818 labourers who applied for free passage 1836-1840 but never took up on the offer. And, a third records the 749 vessels  (not passengers) which brought assisted emigrants to the Colony  1836-1886.

Bound for South Australia - Passenger Lists 1836-1851

This website, produced by Dianne Cummings, has nearly all the Passenger Lists for the 3000 overseas and local ships that came to South Australia between 1836-1851, plus a host of additional information (individual names, ages, occupations, etc).

What makes the website unique is their collection of reports on many of the voyages, plus over 30 Ship Diaries & Journals.  The site includes over 200 photos of South Australian Pioneers from between 1836 and 1840.


German Emigrants to South Australia, 1837-1866

This is a new project of immigrants arriving in South Australia, from Germany. These lists have been transcribed from the original passenger lists, by Robert Janmaat of Adelaide, who has generously shared them with TheShipsList. Where available, extracts regarding a particular ship have been included, from the Sydney Shipping Gazette and the South Australian Register. The South Australian Government Gazette (return showing deaths on board Emigrant ships 1849 to 5th June 1865) has also been consulted.


Immigrants to South Australia, (UK, assisted passage) 1847-1886

This is a ongoing project of immigrants arriving in South Australia, mostly under United Kingdom assisted passage schemes, 1847-1886. These lists have been transcribed from the original passenger lists, by Robert Janmaat of Adelaide, who has generously shared them with TheShipsList. Where available, extracts regarding a particular ship have been included, from the Sydney Shipping Gazette and the South Australian Register. The South Australian Government Gazette (return showing deaths on board Emigrant ships 1849 to 5th June 1865) has also been consulted. There are additional sources listed on the site.
