Spinster parties take the form of a lunch before a wedding, when only ladies who have been girl friends of the bride are invited A tribute to the male persuasion is for the hostess to ask half her guests to pretend they are men and to carry on the conversation with their partners as though they were squires of dames. At these little lunches everything is chosen to given pleasure to the chief guest, who is soon to leave the ranks of maiden-hood. Her favourite colour decorates the table, her favourite flowers are used, and she is asked to name her favourite wines and her favourite dish, which are included in the menu. It is her day, and everything is done in her honour.
